Invisalign FAQ: How Clear Aligners Will Help Your Smile

Treatment with Invisalign clear aligners has become more popular over the years as an alternative to treatment with braces. But people may have questions about Invisalign. How does Invisalign work? How do you care for Invisalign? How long will you wear Invisalign? How much does Invisalign cost? Ohana Orthodontics is proud to be an Invisalign provider for Canby, OR. We can answer your questions about Invisalign, including whether Invisalign is the right treatment for you.

While we occasionally get some unusual questions, most questions about Invisalign are common. Here are some of the most common questions about Invisalign clear aligners.

How Long Does Invisalign Treatment Take?

This is often one of the first questions asked about Invisalign. Good news! Invisalign treatment often takes the same to less time than braces treatment. Treatment times vary depending on how many dental issues need to be addressed and how severe they might be. It also varies depending on whether we’re using Invisalign for Teens or Adults. Invisalign Teen is made specifically for teenagers whose jaws haven’t properly set yet. That makes it easier to move their teeth. It’s slightly more difficult to move the teeth in adults, so that adult treatment may take a bit longer. Rest assured, whether you’re a teenager or an adult, Invisalign can treat you at any age!

Are There Food Restrictions With Invisalign?

Unlike braces bonded to your teeth, Invisalign trays can be removed. That means you don’t have to have them on when you eat or drink, so you don’t have to worry about damaging them when you eat certain foods. You can remove your trays and eat or drink whatever you want. Just brush your teeth and rinse your trays before putting them back into your mouth.

How Do I Clean My Invisalign Trays?

There are certain ways to clean your Invisalign trays to keep them from damaging. Never use toothpaste because abrasive materials in it can scratch your Invisalign trays and make them look cloudy. Use lukewarm water and a soft-bristled toothbrush to dislodge any food particles. Soak your Invisalign in water and special tablets made to clean clear aligners. Some people use denture tablets, but make sure they’re non-abrasive. You can also use a mixture of water, vinegar, or baking soda. Keep your Invisalign clean to avoid discoloring them and prevent bacteria from becoming trapped against your teeth, accelerating tooth decay.

Will Invisalign Affect My Speech?

When you first get your Invisalign, it may take a few days to get used to having them in your mouth. You may have a slight lisp for a couple of days. Once your tongue and lips are used to the Invisalign, it should become much easier to speak like normal.

If you continue to have speech problems, give us a call. Your trays are not fitting properly, and you may need a replacement tray. We can make adjustments to your Invisalign, so it fits properly.

How Often Do I Need to Go for Appointments?

Invisalign works by wearing a certain set of trays for 1-2 weeks, then switching them out for the next set in the series. Each new set moves your teeth differently. We usually give you 6-8 weeks’ worth of Invisalign trays. After that, we would like to see you in the office to check your progress and give you the next trays. Usually, you will have fewer office visits with Invisalign than with braces.

How Often Do I Need to Wear the Clear Aligners?

It’s imperative that you wear your Invisalign at least 22 hours a day, taking them out only to eat, drink, brush, and floss. The less you wear your Invisalign, the longer your treatment time will be and the worse your results. Invisalign treatment takes as much commitment from you as it does from us, so if you don’t think you’ll wear them, then braces treatment might be better for you.

Does Invisalign Cost More Than Braces?

The cost of your treatment depends more on how much treatment you will need rather than whether braces vs. Invisalign. The cost of Invisalign has dropped over the years, so it is competitively priced compared to braces. If you’re concerned about paying for your braces or Invisalign treatment, Ohana Orthodontics offers several financing options to help your treatment fit your budget.
